BIKE TOUR MINDO

Biking to the Tropical Cloud Forest of Mindo

3 Days 2 Nights

DAY 1: QUITO> ECO-ROUTE VIA MOUNTAIN BIKESMINDO CLOUD FOREST ECO HOUSE

Departure towards the North of Quito by minibus or by a 4×4 double cabin truck with our cyclist guide/driver and the bikes to the outskirts of Quito (if 5 people come, another vehicle will be necessary). Once out of the city, the 78km of mountain cycling begins along the “Eco Ruta” from 2880m descending to 1280 as approaching Mindo. Lunch will be provided as a picnic en route. Dinner and night will be spent at an eco house at the foot of a tropical cloud forest, with an abundance of streams and waterfalls and a paradise for birds.

DAY 2 :MINDO> HIKING TUBING/CANOPYING/CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Enjoy a self-service breakfast. Hiking then “tarabita” (a suspended basket) towards the reserve and the Nambillo waterfalls by crossing the cloud forest. Optional swimming.Lunch of “tilapia” at Mindo. In the afternoon there will be the choice of : visiting a butterfly farm, doing tubing in Mindo river, canopying over cloud forest or visiting a chocolate factory or canyoning or climbing waterfalls (also possible to do the following day instead of visiting the lek). Time to relax and watch the birds. Dinner in the village of Mindo (the best pizza) followed by Fiesta libre (for amateurs). Night at the house.

DAY3 :MINDO : COCK-OF-THE-ROCK LEK QUITO

Possible visit to a lekof“cock-of-the-rock” very early in the morning (around 4a.m) or 1 or 2 other activities (not done the previous day). Breakfast.Possible short excursion to smallwaterfalls near the house and climbing up the larger ones.Free lunchtime. Return to Quito with the driver around 12:30 (or later in the afternoon if wanted).
OR ON OPTION: Day biking to El Cinto River.

2 Day 1 Night:

The same itinerary as detailed above, without the 3rd day and dinner & night at the house on day 2.

ANDES - AMAZON - PACIFIC COAST

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN QUITO - ECUADOR
Welcome reception by our guide/tour leader specialized in biking at the airport. Transfer to the Hotel in Quito.

DAY 2: QUITO - AMAZON: TENA - WAYSAYACU.
Road to the Amazon, to Tena, (capital of Napo Province) and first bike expedition to “Talag Community” and natural pools “Waysayacu”: swimming and possible walk in the tropical forest. Typical lunch on the way. In the afternoon, we continue cycling to the Quichua community of Sinchi Pura, located on the side of the beautiful “Jatun Yacu” River. Meeting with local residents. Dinner and overnight in local and rustic cabins bungalows.

DAY 3: AMAZON
Walk through the jungle, observing its flora, medicinal plants and if is possible birds and animals. Indigenous community activity, observing their lifestyle, their agricultural production and handicrafts. Lunch in the community. After dinner, Quichua Legends. Overnight in bungalows.
For those wishing to wake up at 3 am to share with the Quichua community, their ritual "guayusa" drinking and other rites. Later, possible fishing in the river with men of the community.

DAY 4: AMAZON: TENA – (RAFTING in option) - BAÑOS
Early departure from the community to the Andes, to the beautiful thermal town: “Baños”. (Or on option rafting down “Jatun Yacu” river for aprox. 2 hours). On the way, visit of the amazing “Pailón del Diablo” waterfall, then biking from “San Borja” to “Ulba”, through tropical landscapes, cloud forests with rivers. Then transfer to Baños, located at the foot of Tungurahua active volcano. Box Lunch or local lunch on the way. Overnight in a cozy hotel. Optionally, nocturnal thermal bath (recommended) in the municipal hot springs. Free dinner. .

DAY 5: BAÑOS-RIOBAMBA.
Departure from Baños to Pelileo (“Salasacas” Indigenous region) and then continuation to “Quero”, then “Cevallos” and then we crossed the mountain by biking up to the artisanal tapestry village: “Guano”, Box lunch on the way. Then bike up to Riobamba. Then to the spectacular region of Chimborazo volcano (the highest in Ecuador, 6310 m. to a “Puruha” Indigenous community.. Meeting with the community people, Dinner and overnight in guest rooms.

DAY 6: CHIMBORAZO - SALINAS - RIOBAMBA.
Departure to the “Cruz del Arenal” site by bus then biking to “Siamiatug” to “Salinas de Bolivar” (most exemplary community village and fair trade of Ecuador), through extraordinary Andean landscapes. City Tour, Rural lunch in a local restaurant. Then bus back to Riobamba. Dinner and overnight at a mountain inn.

DAY 7: RIOBAMBA- ALAUSI ANDES TRAIN - COAST: GUAYAQUIL.
Trip by bus to “Alausi” through Indigenous villages and great view of “Colta” Lagoon. Arrival at the small train station of Alausi and ride on board the famous Train of the Andes through the impressive Devil's Nose to “Sibambe” terminal, with a free coffee break. Then we return to “Alausi”, then bus to the Pacific Coast, to the most important city and port in Ecuador: “Guayaquil”. Panoramic city tour and walk along the “Malecon 2000” and up to the old quarter of “Las Peñas”. Free dinner, overnight at the hotel.

DAY 8: GUAYAQUIL - PACIFIC COAST: MACHALILLA PARK- PUERTO LOPEZ.
Short bus driver to “Jipijapa” (typical Coast town), approx 2 hours, then biking from “Julcuy” to Machalilla National Park. Visit of the community and the archaeological site of “Agua Blanca” (33km, unique dry tropical landscapes, visit of the traditional local communities (place where lived the Manta culture 1500 BC). Lunch. Then we continue by bike to the spectacular and famous beach of Los Frailes. We enjoy the beach until closing and then biking to the beach city of: Puerto Lopez. Rest (and possible swimming in the ocean). Dinner and overnight in a panoramic hotel with swimming pool.

DAY 9: PACIFIC COAST - PUERTO LOPEZ - MONTAÑITA

OPTION 1: Boat trip to the beautiful “Isla de la Plata”, a small island off Puerto Lopez with the same ecosystem than Galapagos and similar animals, like sea birds, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, pelicans, and albatross (if we are lucky). Island Tour walking and possibilities of swimming and snorkeling. Lunch. Return to Puerto Lopez and according to the arrival time, possible short bike tour through the Sun Route (“Ruta del Sol”), along the ocean. Then bus to “Montañita” beach and village: highly appreciated by Ecuadorian surfers.

OPTION 2: Departure by bike from Puerto Lopez to “Montañita” (65 kms, almost 5 hours), discovering beautiful landscapes of dry and cloud forests.
Arrival at the hotel (at the beach or in town), and possible swimming in the ocean. Optional farewell cocktail and dinner at the Hotel or in a nice bar restaurant. Overnight.

SURFING LESSONS IN OPTION IN THE AFTERNOON in MONTAÑITA.

DAY 10: MONTAÑITA - GUAYAQUIL - INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT DEPARTURE

Free beach morning, then a, then drive to Guayaquil. Transfer to the Airport and flight back home

From the ANDES to the PACIFIC COAST

Day 1 - ARRIVAL IN SOUTH AMERICA: ECUADOR:QUITO IN THE ANDES - 2800 MSNM
Welcome at the airport of Quito by our guide specialized in mountain biking. Then transfer of 1h or 1h30 to Quito city, your hotel. Welcome cocktail and typical dinner at the hotel and presentation of your bike tour program by the guide. Overnight.

Day 2 – ANDES: QUITO - GUAYALLABAMBA CANON RIVER COTACACHI COMMUNITY
City tour of Quito, of its historical center, classified World Cultural Heritage. Transfer to the Equator Monument “Mitad del Mundo” and first day of adventure on 2 wheels. Descent by the canyon of Guayllabamba river of almost 1000 meters of altitude. In the way, stop at the Rumicucho ruins, a “Caranqui” archeological site of the Inca time. Continuation by bike acrossthe Andean dry forest, one of the several Ecuadorian microclimates; and possible view of Cotacachi and Cayambe volcanoes. After 3 hours of descent by beautiful and diverse landscapes, arrival at the bottom of the canon of Guayallabamba river. Then drive toward Imbabura province, up to an Indigenous community close by Otavalo. Overnight in a family homestay.

Day 3 – ANDES: COTACACHI PEGUCHE COMMUNITY
Transfer toOtavalo by bike and visit of its well-known Indigenous market , considered the largest of South America and appreciated for its very varied handicraft of all Ecuador. Then biking to Peguche village, famous for its traditional weavers and musicians. Visit of one or 2 workshops and refresh at the sacred waterfall. During the bike ride, observation of the Indigenous life in the country site and in the villages, located at the foot of the Imbabura volcano. After, transfer by car or bike to the community. Overnight in homestay.

Day 4 – ANDES: COMMUNITY - CUICOCHA –COTACACHI
Transfer to the lake of Cuicocha crater, walk around of 2 hours and watching of the native Andean flora and bird species (if lucky: the Condor). Then biking toward Cotacachi village, up to 3000 meters and descent crossing Indigenous villages and nice landscapes. Visit of Cotacachi, known for its leather garments. Possible visit of some leather shops. Transfer to the community, relax time, possible meeting with some inhabitants.

Day 5 – ANDES: IMBABURA COTOPAXI: (Canopy and/or Horse riding on option)
Drive during 3 hours toward the South, crossing the “Avenue of the Volcanoes” up to Cotopaxi province. Arrival at a cozy eco touristic hacienda, dedicated to fighting bulls and milk cows , located at the foot of the splendid Cotapaxi volcano (of 5900meters, 2nd highest summit of Ecuador). On option, in the way, possible stop to practice canopy (or zip lines) and overfly a beautiful Andean landscape. After a typical Ecuadorian lunch, possible biking in the hacienda surroundings or on option, sensational horse riding or walk up to the “mirador” to get a panoramic view of the Cotopaxi and Ruminahui volcanoes. Then relax time at the cozy hacienda house. Overnight in typical and simple room (with shared bathroom) or on option in a more comfortable room with private bathroom.

Day 6 – ANDES: COTOPAXI - QUILOTOA
After breakfast, transfer by car to the National Park of Cotopaxi volcano up to Santo Domingo lagoon, rarely visited and watching of Andean birds. Short walk around the lagoon and biking up to the “manantial” springand to visit the small archeological site of Salitre. Then crossing of the glacier valley of Limpiopungo and appreciation of an extraordinary view of Cotopaxi volcano. Continuation up the park entrance then drive to the Quilotoa lake region. Arrival at a charming hacienda house. Overnight.

Day 7 – ANDES: COTOPAXI QUILOTOA
Transfer to another volcanic caldera to appreciate the beautiful Quilotoa lake. Walk down up to its edge and possible observation of the footprints of the last eruption.Meeting with local Indigenous crafters. After box lunch or lunch at a community restaurant, biking up to Chugchilan village, crossing small villages and observing the Indigenous and country people. Overnight at a charming country inn.

Day 8 – ANDES : CHUGCHILAN SIGCHOS COSTA: ALLURIQUIN SANTO DOMINGO
Early route down the cloud and subtropical forest toward the Coast region, leaving behind the Andes altitude. This day, observation of the fascinating diversity of landscapes and plants, trees: extraordinary characteristic of Ecuador that attracts all visitors of Ecuador. Continuation following the canon of Toachi river, one of the most important that carries water from the Andes up to Coast. Arrival at the subtropical and hot region of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 9 – SANTO DOMINGO - PACIFIC COAST: CANOA
Drive toward the Pacific Coast up to the beach and small city of Canoa, a paradise close to the Equator Line. Possible part of the way by bike. Leisure day to enjoy the beach and Canoa , drink a tropical fruit cocktail in the night in the best coast atmosphere (no included). Overnight at a hotel at 100 meters of the ocean.

Day 10 –PACIFIC COAST: CANOA MACHALILLA PARK: PUERTO LOPEZ
Early depart toward San Lorenzo, a small village close to Manta, the 2nd harbor of Ecuador. Then biking following the ocean, the “Road of Pacific”, across typical fisher villages, meeting joyful and hospitable people. Arrival at the National Park of Machalilla, at the beautiful beach of Los Frailes, refreshing bath in the ocean. Possible continuation by bike or car up to Puerto Lopez. Overnight at a hotel close to the ocean.

Day 11 – PACIFIC COAST: MACHALILLA PARK : LA PLATA ISLAND
Short walk to Puerto Lopez beach and depart by boat to La Plata island, a lost island of Galapagos archipelago , of same ecosystem and with some of its animals and sea birds. Between June and September, possible whales watching during the navigation. Visit of the island walking to observe its birds and sea lions. Possible swim and snorkel. Lunch on board. Return to Puerto Lopez. OR instead this excursion, possible biking up to Aguas Blanca’s cooperative and archeological site. Relax time at the beach. Overnight

Day 12 - PACIFIC COAST : PUERTO LOPEZ MONTANITA
Early depart by bike from Puerto Lopez to the beach and village of Montañita, across a small cordillera with different flora of the dry tropical forest up to the cloud forest. After almost 5 hours of pedaling, arrival at Montañita, the Ecuadorian surf capital, worldwidefamous and also for its night life. Free afternoon to enjoy the beach andatypical. Overnight in a small local hotel in the village or closet he beach.

Day 13 – PACIFIC COAST: MONTANITA
After breakfast, on option, private class of surfing or rent of a surf and surfing for the experimented. Or leisure day to relax in this perfect place (between November and March: warm weather then between June and October, temperate or fresh weather. Farewell cocktail anddinner. Overnight at the same hotel. On option, night diversion at a bar or a disco or salsoteca. B – Dincluded.

Day 14. COAST: MONTANITA GUAYAQUIL FLIGHT BACK HOME
Last beach morning and in Ecuador then drive to Guayaquil, the biggest city and port of Ecuador. Farewell lunch with beer. Transfer to the airport and flight back home.
